Academic Preparation

It is agreed that the minimum educational and competence level for Advanced Nursing Practice is that of Master’s level which is Level 11 under the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) or Level 7 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Agreement has now been reached in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland that individuals working at Advanced Practice level should be able to demonstrate evidence of Master's level learning, such as studying at postgraduate certificate or diploma level while working towards Master's level. Achievement at this level can be demonstrated either by academic award or through mapping portfolio outcomes against the level. Aligned to the educational level preparation is the need for competence and confidence development within Advanced Practice roles.
