NHS Education for Scotland

As the Advanced Nursing Practice role is developed more consistently it becomes increasingly possible to explore aggregated data due to the refined and defined role parameters. The Information Services Division (ISD) is a division of National Services Scotland, part of NHS Scotland. It provides health information, health intelligence, statistical services and advice that support the NHS in progressing quality improvement in health and care and facilitates robust planning and decision making.

In 2017 ISD began presenting and reporting on the numbers of Advanced Nurse Practitioners in NHS Scotland by Board following a data cleanse in line with the ANP Definition provided by the CNOD briefing paper on Advanced Nursing Practice. At the 30th of September 2017 there were a total of 642 ANPs in post equating to 577.1 Whole Time Equivalent (WTE). This figure excludes primary care ANPs.

Although metrics for independent and non-NHS organisations is held locally - national data is emerging with recent service and educational need analyses.
